Labor’s Health Funding Myths Busted in Groom
Friday, 12 April 2019
Federal Member for Groom John McVeigh said Commonwealth funding for the Darling Downs Local Health Network had increased by more than $100 million under the Liberal National Coalition Government.
Dr McVeigh said he wanted to set the record straight on health funding in the Groom electorate to counter Labor’s track record of lies and mistruths when it comes to health and hospital funding.
“Since 2013, funding the Darling Downs Local Health Network had increased by more than $104 million to 2017-18; and this is set to continue to increase by $200 million to 2024-25,” he said.
“This is a massive increase of more than 300 per cent over that period.”
Dr McVeigh said the facts about health funding were available via a health funding facts website.
“The Health Funding Facts website has been launched to help families and communities in the region see how they are benefiting from the Coalition Government’s strong track record on guaranteeing essential health services for all Australians,” Dr McVeigh said.
“I encourage everyone to take a look and get the facts of themselves on health and hospital funding and not listen to the mistruths coming out of Labor and the minor parties.
www.health.gov.au/health-funding-facts is a one-stop-shop enabling families to access data on how the Coalition Government is investing in:
• Record health and hospital funding
• Historic high bulk billing rates
• A record number of life-saving medicines subsidised through the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS).
Dr McVeigh said in addition to the significant increase in hospital funding, Medicare funding in the Groom electorate has also increased from $116.8 million in 2012-13 to $154.4 million in 2017-18.
“Under the Liberal and National Coalition there have been an extra 231 056 GP visits that were bulk billed in the Groom electorate and our current GP bulk billing rate now stands at 84 per cent.
“We can only guarantee these essential health services - stronger health and hospitals funding, historic high bulk billing rates and a record number of PBS listings - through a stronger economy.
“The Coalition Government’s plan for a stronger economy with more jobs and economic growth means better, more reliable health services for Groom electorate.”
