The Federal Government is experiencing rapid and ongoing growth in visa caseloads and visa application volumes are forecast to increase from some 9 million per annum to 13 million per year by 2026-27.
Consistent with standard practice the Department of Home Affairs is testing the market to seek innovative ideas and solutions to advise the Government on how best to modernise the visa system and make it easier to understand easier to navigate and more responsive to the nation’s economic social and security interests.
The visa system is not being privatised. The Government will continue to have responsibility for all visa decision making whether it be to grant or refuse a visa to a non-citizen.
The Government will always retain control over and responsibility for national security.
Partnering with the private sector to process visas has been part of our system for over 20 years.
Since 2002 private sector partners have provided client services to support visa applications offshore on a user-pay arrangement. The Department envisages that by leveraging the capability available in the market it can improve the quality and efficiency of services for visa applicants and bring a range of value added services to them.
