Sixteen community groups in the Groom electorate will benefit from a share in federal funding to support local volunteers across Australia.
Federal Member for Groom John McVeigh joined representatives of the Lions Club of Toowoomba West today to announce the successful recipients of the 2019-20 Volunteer Grants round.
Dr McVeigh said the grants, between $1,000 and $5,000, and will enable organisations in Groom to better support their volunteers to purchase small equipment, pay fuel, transport and training costs.
“Our region has been significantly impacted by Coronavirus, on-going drought and other challenges this year. This funding will go a long way to support volunteers to continue their important work in the community,” Dr McVeigh said.
“Volunteers are an integral part of our society, especially during difficult times. Their contribution is vital to ensuring that we continue to support families, provide employment pathways for young people and strengthen community resilience.”
Dr McVeigh said the Lions Club of Toowoomba West is will receive $2,150 under the program towards the maintenance of the Lions Train at Picnic Point.
“Every Sunday volunteers of the Lions Club of Toowoomba West provide a wonderful service for local kids and visiting families, conducting train rides around the beautiful Picnic Point parklands,” he said.
“I am very pleased the Government is able to support the Lions Club of Toowoomba West to continue this much-loved community activity and help with the cost of repairs and maintenance to the Lions Train.”
Dr McVeigh said the work of the Lions Club of Toowoomba West was an example of some of the great activities local volunteers undertake in our community each year to make our lives more enjoyable.
“We are fortunate in our region to have a very rich and vibrant volunteer culture, which contributes greatly to our quality of life. I thank our volunteers and congratulate local organisations that have been successful under our latest round of Volunteer Grants,” he said.
