Volunteers working on events during the annual Oakey Show will have access to better more user-friendly equipment with the help of a grant from Round 5 of the Coalition Government’s Stronger Communities program.
Federal Member for Groom John McVeigh joined Oakey Show Society representatives Judith and Geoff Byers on-site recently to announce $8,300 in funding from the Federal Government which will support a $16,600 upgrade to the cattle yard facilities.
“The Oakey Show has been a vital community event for more than 110 years and each year the organising committee spend countless hours working on exhibits, events and activities to support its ongoing success,” he said.
“In 2019 the Oakey Show Society introduced a Prime Cattle Show & Sale, which generated a lot of interest and support and is something the Committee would like to build on in the future.
“Funding under Stronger Communities will go towards the expansion of the cattle yards, which will help expand the event in 2020 and beyond,” he said.
Oakey Show Society Vice-President Geoff Byers said funding would make a big difference, particularly for volunteers working throughout the annual show.
“Basically this will significantly improve the existing stockyards that we have and will make it much easier to run the events, in particular it will help our volunteers with the set-up of equipment on the day,” he said.
“Our volunteers work so hard to deliver the annual Oakey Show each year for our community and I am very pleased we are able to make these changes to support the expansion of the cattle show and make life a little easier for our helpers on the day,” he said.
Dr McVeigh said the Stronger Communities program provided much-needed support for local community organisations across the country.
“I am very proud to be able to support local organisations in the Groom electorate like the Oakey Show Society. The volunteers that make up these organisations work tirelessly for the benefit of the wider community and I am truly grateful for what they do.”
