Animal care services in the region officially reached new heights today with the opening of the multi-million dollar Toowoomba Animal Care Centre.
Federal Member for Groom Dr John McVeigh MP opened the $9.6m facility today, which will increase the RSPCA’s capacity to deliver animal services in the region by 121%.
“The Toowoomba Animal Care Centre has been designed to extend and develop RSPCA Toowoomba’s existing animal care operations into a world-class animal adoption centre,” Dr McVeigh said.
“Not only does the facility provide for care for more animals and have an increased ability to facilitate greater levels of animal adoption, it offers economic and social benefits, which will support our region well into the future.
“Under the Building Better Regions Fund, the Australian Government has committed more than $4.8m to the project. It is fantastic to see the results of the collaborative efforts of the Australian Government, RSPCA Queensland Limited, The Jelley Family Foundation and a number of generous donors in bringing this project to fruition.”
“Staff numbers at the centre currently sit at 12 and the project supported 40 jobs during construction. Other benefits include an increased number of community volunteering opportunities; pre-employment, education and training opportunities, including 45 work-for-the-dole positions; the provision of animals for animal therapy service providers; and the first wildlife triage area in the region, enabling RSPCA Toowoomba to hold and assess rescued koalas.”
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development Michael McCormack said the Australian Government’s $4,821,293 investment in community infrastructure would provide long term benefits to the Toowoomba region.
The Australian Government is investing $841 million from 2017-18 to 2022-23 in the Building Better Regions Fund. The fund aims to create jobs, drive economic growth and build stronger regional communities.
